Our History

Flathead Nordic Backcountry Patrol began in 1975 as the Essex Nordic Patrol, serving the trail system at the Izaak Walton Inn.

As the demand for backcountry rescue and avalanche expertise grew, so did we. In 1981, we renamed the organization to reflect our expanding scope and regional responsibility.

FNBP played an instrumental role in developing the Flathead County Avalanche Search Plan and helped establish what was the Northwest Montana Avalanche Center. We remain the only Nordic patrol in the Northern Division of the National Ski Patrol — a distinction that reflects both our heritage and our continued leadership in mountain safety.

Our Training

Preparation is the foundation of our work.

FNBP members participate in comprehensive, ongoing training programs designed to meet the realities of winter backcountry response. Training opportunities include:

  • CPR & First Aid

  • Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC)

  • Mountain Travel & Rescue (MTR)

  • Advanced Mountain Travel & Rescue

  • Avalanche I & II

  • Ski skills development

  • Toboggan handling

  • Instructor development programs

  • Senior patroller training

  • Candidate education and mentorship

Training is conducted throughout the Northern Division and emphasizes both technical excellence and teamwork in demanding winter environments.
